Belogiannis lives, because the movement that raised him lives and develops

On the 30th of March, 65 years will have passed since the execution of Nikos Belogiannis, heroic cadre of the KKE and his comrades. On the 27th of March, the "Nikos Belogiannis" Museum was opened in Amaliada, his place of birth, so that it can become "a place of living and creative memory", as the GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, noted in his speech at the opening ceremony. The ceremony was also addressed by the Mayor of Ilidas, C. Christodopoulos, the Speaker of the Parliament, N. Voutsis and the Prime Minister, A. Tsipras.

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, in his speech at the ceremony, noted amongst other things that "Belogiannis lives, because the movement that raised and educated him lives and develops. (...) Belogiannnis did his duty. He honoured the dead of the labour struggles from the interwar period, of EAM-ELAS, DSE, of the struggles for social rights. He was their worthy successor and served social progress and the people as a whole. This is why we do not consider him to be a hero just for the KKE. His heroism, his example, in a period of the labour-people's movement's defeat, demonstrates that the path is kept open and the flame alive in even the darkest periods (...)The KKE learns from the history of N.Belogiannis and thousands of other heroes. It understands its own responsibilities in a more demanding way in the conditions today of the retreat of the labour-people's movement at a global level. As regards the task of politically awakening the working class-popular forces so that they take matters into their own hands.

The communist leader wrote in his final letter that "Instead of choosing the life of a career-and I could have easily created such a life-I preferred a life full of persecution, deprivations, pain and tears». (...)

In periods of defeat, difficulties, those that deserted the communist and workers' movement provided valuable services to the enemy. Those that cursed socialist construction in the 20th Century, disavowed the socialist perspective, surrendered to capitalism and sow defeatism and fatalism amongst the people, in the name of realism, submission and the negative correlation of forces, in this way justifying the disappointment of promises, the cheapening of expectations. They reach the point of decorating their compromise, talking of "revolutions" and "overthrows", presenting themselves as the followers of the EAM tradition, the revolutionary traditions, of the major class and liberation struggles. They make desperate attempts to present themselves as the followers of the struggle of the heroic EAM, ELAS, EPON, DSE, EDA in the 1950s and 1960s, attempting to hijack the struggles of our people and of course always detaching these struggles from their real, radical content.

However, what the EAM National Resistance and militants like Belogiannis teach us is the uncompromising and unwavering struggle. They teach us not to submit to the negative correlation of forces, to an enemy who may seem invincible. We have deep confidence in the strength of the just causes of the working class, of our people. (...) As Belogiannis wrote:"You draw endless and inexhaustible strength from your trust in the party and victory".(...)

Let this museum, this exhibition about the life and works of Nikos Belogiannis, here in Amaliada, be a place to honour him, for living and creative memory, for our children and grandchildren, the future generations that will pick up the baton. Because historical knowledge and memory lend us strength."
