D. Koutsoumpas to the President of Ukraine: The aim to ban the dissemination of the communist ideals, the banning of the CP, the criminal prosecutions against communists, is a slippery anti-democratic path
On the 15th of April 2015, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, GS of the CC of the KKE and President of the Parliamentary Group of the KKE sent the following letter to the President of Ukraine, P. Poroshenko:
To the President of Ukraine
Petro Poroshenko
Athens, 15/4/2015
Mr President!
On the 9th of April 2015, a month before the 70th anniversary of the Antifascist Victory, your country’s parliament approved a law “"On conviction of Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and the prohibition of propaganda of their symbols" (registration № 2558). In addition, on the same day the country’s parliament adopted another law that heroizes the local collaborators with the Nazis.
These decisions constitute a provocation against all those who fought the fascist monster. It is a blasphemy against the millions of people, who gave their lives in the fight against fascism during the 2nd Imperialist World War. They aim in an unacceptable way to identify the Soviet Union with Nazi Germany, when the contribution of the USSR, with the communists in the frontline, is very well known, as it shouldered the main burden of the war against fascism. It is an insult to the communists of other countries, like Greece, who stood in the vanguard of the struggle against fascism and imperialism, for the people’s rights and freedoms.
Mr President!
The aim to ban the dissemination of the communist ideals, the banning of the CP, the criminal prosecutions against communists, is a slippery anti-democratic path. This dangerous decision is denounced by the KKE and the Greek communists, by the communist parties all over the world and will be opposed by thousands of social and political organizations, millions of people from every corner of the planet. First of all, however, you will be opposed by the people of Ukraine, who experienced the major social gains of socialism in your country, giving Ukraine statehood for the first time, as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine, as well as the historic gains humanity experienced in the years of socialism.
Mr President!
Your signature to these unacceptable pieces of legislation would mean the promotion of an anti-historical choice that has been condemned by the peoples and would mean that you would find yourself in opposition to the right to political activity, in opposition to the people’s rights, and you would bear great responsibilities.
