Question of the KKE Delegation to the European Parliament on the arrest and detention of Y. Gavrilov by the authorities of Ukraine

The arrest and detention of Y. Gavrilov by the authorities of Ukraine was denounced by the MEP of the KKE, Kostas Papadakis, in his question to the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, F. Mogherini, stressing that the Ukrainian authorities, have carried out many acts of persecution against people on the basis of their political views.

The MEP of the KKE made the following specific reference in his question:

"On June 21 2017 the counter-intelligence agency of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) arrested Yevgeny Tichonovic Gavrilov, cadre of the organization "Workers' Front" in the village of Orlifka (territorial district of Pokrovski, region of Donietsk) on the accusation of "terrorist activity".This accusation was based on the reasoning that there were various books in his house, chiefly of a historical nature. On August 15 2017 the detention of Y. Gavrilov was extended for two months.

It is being demonstrated that the current reactionary authorities of Ukraine, which ascended to power via a coup, having the support of the EU, USA, NATO, utilizing even fascist forces for this goal, have carried out many acts of persecution against people who do not agree with the ideological views of the new regime.

This unacceptable anti-democratic behaviour of the current authorities of Ukraine even provides for the criminal prosecution and indeed with serious and unproved accusations regarding "terrorism" and imprisonment.

What position does the the European Commission take regarding this unacceptable situation related to violation of basic freedoms and rights in Ukraine and the just demand for the immediate release of Yevgeny Tichonovic Gavrilov and other people who are being persecuted for their political and ideological views in Ukraine today."
