On Friday, 17 September, on the occasion of the NATO Military Committee Conference in Athens, thousands of people denounced the new Greece–US Agreement on military bases and the overall dangerous policy that entangles Greece increasingly deeper into imperialist plans.

Trade unions, unions of the self-employed, student associations, women's associations, and other mass organizations responded to the call of the Struggle Committee against the Greece–US Agreement on military bases and demanded that “All bases must close, no participation in the NATO war”. The demonstrators denounced the imperialist interventions and wars that uproot thousands of people from their homelands, as well as the anti-immigration policy that turns the Mediterranean into a “sea of the dead” and the exorbitant expenditure on NATO equipment that massacre the peoples. The rally ended with a march to the US embassy.

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, attended the rally and made the following statement to the media:

“We are here today, on the occasion of the NATO Military Committee Conference and the EuroMed 9 summit in Athens. Both of these events forecast new torments for the peoples at a time when competition is intensifying internationally, especially following yesterday's agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

In the next period, until 2030, we will witness an intensification of all war conflicts and interventions, new refugee flows. This is the forecast internationally. And from this point of view, the Greek government bears enormous responsibilities that lead the people and the country to such war plans through NATO and, in particular, with the extension of the dangerous Greece-US Agreement on Military Bases.”
