Meeting of D. Koutsoumpas with the Prime Minister regarding the developments in Syria

Date:
Sep 5, 2013

The imperialist intervention being prepared in Syria and the participation of the Greek government in it were at the centre of the meeting of the GS of the CC of the KKE, D. Koutsoumpas, with the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Wednesday 4th of September at the Prime Minister’s residence. The meeting took place in the framework of the initiatives that the KKE has undertaken in the face of the very serious developments in Syria and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

After the completion of the meeting, Dimitris Koutsoumpas stated:

“We expressed our categorical opposition-in every way- to the country’s involvement in the intervention against Syria. Greece, the Greek people and youth will pay a high price for any involvement in an imperialist war. We believe in the final analysis that the claims and pretexts used by the US leadership and its allies on the issue related to the chemical weapons in Syria are fairy tales for small children- that not even small children would believe. It is very clear that this is a provocation carried out by other forces and not of course by the Assad regime. So we think that even a small surgical – as they call it- brief strike against Syria by the Americans and their allies will open up a Pandora’s Box in this region.

It is a region which is an arena of tough competition among the strong imperialist powers, strong capitalist states, both internationally and at a regional level. Of course, it is well-known, extremely well-known that this region has enormous geo-strategic and geopolitical significance and due to the mineral resources it possesses, as well as the oil, natural gas and their transport routes.

The youth, the people, the labour and people’s movement must be continually vigilant and in a constant state of readiness. Along with the daily struggle for survival due to the capitalist economic crisis, due to the political line of the governments and the EU, the anti-people measures, the struggle against the privatizations and the commercialization of Health, Education, the anti-social-security laws which are coming again, the reductions in salaries and pensions, the intensification of unemployment, dismissals, as well as the latest incident with the attempt to downsize and finally close-as is being heard- the country’s defense industry, ELBO (the Hellenic Vehicle Industry) and LARKO (General Mining and Metallurgical Company), our people must include the disentanglement of Greece from any intervention in their slogans and so that it does not participate together with all these things. The base at Suda must be closed now and no facilities must be provided, not the military airport of Kalamata and not  the other infrastructure in our country. And of course the slogan must be used which the young men and women of our country are shouting every day on the demonstrations: “No land, no water for the murderers of the peoples”.”

In the framework of the same initiative, D. Koutsoumpas met on Monday with the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Behnam Behrouz, and the ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Osvaldo Martinez. The meetings took place at the headquarters of the CC of the KKE in Perissos. Last Wednesday the GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, met with the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Greece,Vladimir Chkhikvishvili, at the headquarters of the CC of the party in Perissos. The GS of the CC of the KKE also met with representatives of the embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
