Since Friday, 4 February, roadblocks have been set up at Nikaia junction, in Thessaly, which constitutes an epicentre for the struggle of toiling farmers. Multifaceted mobilizations, activities, and roadblocks are taking place across the country, with the farmers declaring that “enough is enough”.
The ND government from the first moment attempted to repress the farmers’ struggle by deploying police forces; however, the repression forces retreated in face of the farmers’ decisive stance.
Giorgos Lambroulis, MP of the KKE, was on the side of the toiling farmers from the very first moment, while dozens of trade unions and mass organizations of the area also support the farmers’ just struggle.
The thousands of small producers escalate their struggle, demanding:
- Reduction of production costs, by abolishing the price adjustment clause on electricity, tax-free petrol, subsidizing animal feedstuffs and farm supplies, and abolishing VAT on means and supplies.
- Protection from natural disasters, by implementing all the necessary infrastructure projects (irrigation, land improvement, etc.), as well as changing the regulation of the Greek Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA), in order to fully insure and compensate production and capital.
- Prices that cover production costs and will ensure dignified income.
