The fact that the KKE denounced from the outset both the government’s reactionary proposals for constitutional revision and the unacceptable procedure being followed was highlighted by the General Secretary of the KKE Central Committee, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, during his speech in parliament on 10 June 10 in the debate on the constitutional revision process.

He pointed out that, behind false dilemmas —whether concerning the supposed strengthening of the rule of law or a return to European normality and a change of government— lies an attempt to conceal the broad consensus between the government and the opposition. The two sides are engaged in a convenient confrontation and a misleading debate that bears little relation to the real problems faced by the people, which are becoming increasingly acute amid the country’s deeper involvement in imperialist wars and the possibility of a new capitalist economic crisis. He stressed that all the parties of the system share common objectives that are dangerous for the people, including support for investment plans designed to boost profitability, the growing supremacy of unacceptable EU legislation, and the maintenance of ministerial immunity.

He added that the advancement of these reactionary objectives requires “political stability” is needed, which, in reality, means insecurity and instability for the people. He denounced proposals aimed at tighter control over the functioning of political parties, increased censorship in the media, and further attacks on the people’s social rights and freedoms.

“For the people to win, capital must lose”, he emphasized. He called for the repeal of the reactionary provisions that support the transformation of the country into a vast US–NATO base, as well as the abolition of the article granting extensive tax exemptions and privileges for shipping capital. He also advocated the guarantee of universal, public, and free healthcare, education, and social security; environmental protection; the defence of labour and trade union rights; and permanent, stable employment for all.

“All of this will be imposed by the people themselves, by intensifying your difficulties, increasing the instability of your system, and strengthening the growing current of skepticism toward this. Through their organized struggle and by strengthening the KKE, they will sweep away this decayed system of exploitation, poverty, and wars”, stated the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE.
