On Friday 2 October, a group of comrades from the Communist Party of Mexico and the Communist Youth Front of Mexico were subjected to a violent and unprovoked attack by the Federal Police outside the Party’s offices in the center of the capital. The violent police attack resulted in injuries to, amongst others, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Mexico, Miguel Uribe, who was temporarily detained; thePolitical Secretary of the Central Council of the Communist Youth Front of Mexico, Ernesto Santrich, as well as many other comrades. The police carried out eight arrests of communists, whilst confiscating flags, banners, leaflets and other political material.

Members and leaders of the Communist Party of Mexico and its youth wing were on their way to a rally marking the 58th anniversary of the Tlatelolco student massacre, when the then social-democratic government of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) ordered the army to open fire on a mass student demonstration, resulting in the deaths of over 350 young people. The memory of this massacre remains vivid, all the more so given contemporary cases such as the murder of the 43 students in Ayotzinapa in 2014, whilst the Communist Party of Mexico is playing a leading role in bringing the case to light and securing justice for the victims and their families, in the face of attempts by the current MORENA government to cover it up.

The KKE unequivocally condemns the violent attack against the members and leaders of the Communist Party of Mexico and the Communist Youth Front of Mexico, and expresses its unreserved internationalist solidarity with their struggle. The escalating repression by Mexico’s social-democratic government against communists confirms its longstanding anti-popular role against the workers’ and popular movement and its vanguard.

In Mexico, and everywhere else, the need to strengthen the independent struggle of the peoples against governments of all kinds – whether right-wing, liberal or social-democratic – is confirmed.
