In a statement on the signing of the Greece–Israel Agreement on the “Achilles Shield”, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the KKE states the following:
“The Greece–Israel Agreement on the so-called ‘Achilles Shield’ is yet another dangerous decision by the New Democracy government, aimed at accelerating military preparations and deepening the involvement of our country and our people in imperialist wars and plans, as well as in US–NATO aspirations in the region.
The New Democracy government is attempting to conceal this reality behind propagandistic grandstanding about the ‘security architecture of Greek territory’ and the defence of the country.
In practice, strategic relations with the murderous state of Israel, together with joint military preparations, are adding fuel to the fire of imperialist rivalries in the region, as well as the conflicts between the bourgeois classes of Turkey and Israel, and of Greece and Turkey, in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, with the peoples being the victims.
Costing more than €3 billion, this agreement forms part of the broader ‘2030 Agenda’ arms programme serving NATO’s needs, for which our people are paying dearly —tens of billions of euros — at the expense of their rights and needs.
The parties in the opportunist opposition also bear responsibility, as they consistently support the New Democracy government’s strategy and the various military agreements and alliances based on the interests of Greek capital.
Our people have no reason to join in the government’s celebrations. On the contrary, they have every reason to remain vigilant and intensify their struggle against our country’s involvement in imperialist wars and plans.”
