The MEPs of the KKE sent a letter of protest to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, concerning an event organized by the far-right ECR group (European Conservatives and Reformists) entitled “Cuban Mercenaries in the Russian Aggression Against Ukraine”. The event was openly hostile toward Cuba, at a time when the risks of imperialist intervention are increasing.

The MEPs of the KKE denounced the EU’s selective sensitivities, which, on the one hand tolerate such events, while, on the other hand, reject exhibitions expressing solidarity with the Cuban medical brigades that offered assistance during the pandemic, on the grounds that they allegedly contain aggressive content.

The full text of the letter from the KKE MEPs is as follows:

“To Roberta Metsola

President of the European Parliament

Madam President,

By means of this letter, we wish to express our strong protest against your approval, on the basis of the new and unacceptable internal regulations, of the event that took place on Wednesday, 14 January, at the European Parliament in Brussels, entitled “Cuban Mercenaries in the Russian Aggression Against Ukraine”. The event was co-organized by members of the far-right ECR Group (European Conservatives and Reformists) and an organization known as “Assembly of the Cuban Resistance” (ARC).

In addition to ECR MEPs, the speakers included US congressmen known for their hostile stance toward Cuba and their support for all forms of interference in Cuba’s internal affairs, Ukrainian MPs, and members of organizations working to undermine and overthrow the Cuban government, some of whom have openly expressed views in favour of US intervention in Cuba.

On the one hand, the European Parliament’s unacceptable approval of this event —which is openly hostile and subversive toward Cuba and its people, who are currently targets of US aggression according to statements made by President Trump following the military intervention in Venezuela— and, on the other hand, the ban imposed by the European Parliament’s services, with your tolerance, on the exhibition entitled “Henry Reeve Medical Brigades and Cuba: an example of international solidarity” scheduled for January 2025 and organized by MEP Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos, demonstrate the unacceptable double standards adopted by the European Parliament.

The fact that an exhibition dedicated to the selfless contribution and solidarity of Cuban doctors in addressing pandemics and humanitarian disasters around the world was banned under the provocative claim that it contained “aggressive and offensive content”, while an event featuring open calls for imperialist intervention in Cuba and war rhetoric targeting the country in the context of the imperialist war in Ukraine was approved, exposes the European Parliament’s bias and its selective, case-by-case invocation of ‘sensitivities’ depending on the major interests it serves.

We await your response to this serious matter.

Kostas Papadakis

Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos
