In a statement made at the rally organised by trade unions and mass organisations in Syntagma Square on 6 October against the visit of the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, stated the following:
“The Greek people can take no more. They have already paid a heavy price over all these years for the strategic agreement with the US – in the form of soaring energy costs and poverty, excessive taxation, vastamounts of military equipment that is not, however, for the defence of our homeland, and, of course, military involvement and the fact that our country has been filled with American ‘bases of death’ from one end to the other.
The Vertical Corridor, designed to transport exorbitantly expensive American liquefied natural gas, will exacerbate the situation, drive up energy prices and deepen poverty, reduce people’s incomes, undermine people’s rights and, of course, embroil our country in greater imperialist rivalries in the region and in the war plans of its allies.”
