In a statement on the election results in Germany, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the KKE notes the following:

“The attack on workers’ and people’s rights by the bourgeois political forces such as liberalism, social democracy, the pseudo-left, and others, the social contradictions intensifying in every country against the backdrop of capitalist exploitation and imperialist rivalries, combined with the absence of a strong, class-oriented workers’ and communist movement, are the factors that push disillusioned popular forces into the arms of far-right and supposedly “anti-establishment” populism in Germany and elsewhere.

In fact, under conditions of war preparation, such forces are even more useful to the system in spreading the poison of racism and nationalism among workers and the people. This allows the real culprit, the dominant anti-popular policy, the EU of capital and war—the capitalist system itself— to remain unaffected. The people, especially in the regions of the former German Democratic Republic, have suffered the dramatic consequences of the overthrow of socialism 35 years ago. This is why even far-right populist forces, such as the AfD, “are selling” nostalgia in order to co-opt the working-class and popular forces and integrate them into reactionary plans. It is on this ground that the EU cultivates the ahistorical “theory of the two extremes,” which ultimately leads to the exoneration of reactionary, fascist forces. Moreover, the EU consistently supports and strengthens these forces to serve its geopolitical and economic interests.

Only a revitalized labor and popular movement, the class struggle, and the struggle against the root causes that fuel these reactionary currents and have to do with the EU itself, imperialist wars, and imperialist rivalries can provide an answer to the far right, as well as to the usual, bankrupt, and false dichotomies that are being set up.
