According to exclusive information published on 6 June 6 2026 by the newspaper Rizospastis, the organ of the Central Committee of the KKE, the Ukrainian maritime drone detected off the coast of Lefkada on 7 May 2026, carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, was reportedly on a mission to strike a vessel of the Russian Navy. The Russian warship was escorting a merchant ship belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”.
According to the report, this information originates from the official response provided by Ukrainian authorities to the Greek government and was relayed to Rizospastis by sources in Brussels.
Rizospastis notes that “the possibility that the target was military raises the dangers facing the Greek people to an unprecedented level, while also increasing the responsibility of the government that is leading them to the slaughterhouse by involving the country ever more deeply in the imperialist war and in support of the Zelenskyy regime.”
It should be noted that, following the drone’s detection near Lefkada, the government resorted to its usual tactics of concealment, blaming the Ukrainian side for “failing to cooperate” and “not providing specific answers”. However, it now appears that these answers had in fact been provided but were withheld by the Greek government, which only the day before yesterday —one month after the incident— took steps through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to approach the Ukrainian authorities.
This development followed a debate in Parliament on the KKE’s urgent question concerning the incident.
