In a statement regarding Rubio’s visit, the Press Office of the CC of the KKE emphasizes the following:
“The visit by US Secretary of State M. Rubio, as part of the Greece – US StrategicDialogue – which, facilitated by all successive governments, is deepening Greece’s involvement in US-NATO plans and wars – is a dangerous development for our people, particularly at this critical juncture when the Middle East is ablaze, the conflict in Ukraine is escalating and the war fronts are tending to converge.
The US Secretary of State is coming to reach an agreement with the New Democracy government, supported by PASOK, the party of Tsipras and the other parties, on Greece’s increased involvement in imperialist plans and wars; to upgrade the agreement on military bases with the aim of making them permanent, at a time when these bases are already launching pads for war and targets for retaliation, as Russia and Iran have warned.
He is also seeking new and greater commitments from the Greek government regarding the country’s participation in US energy plansthrough the ‘Vertical Corridor’ in the Balkans and the transformation of Greece into an energy hub. These plans do not guarantee cheap energy for the people; in fact, they will further entangle them in the intensifying rivalries in our region.
In the face of this dangerous development, marked by Rubio’s visit to Greece, there is no room for complacency. The time has come to intensify the people’s struggle against our country’s involvement in the US’s dangerous plans, to stop Greece from becoming an aggressor against other peoples and a target for retaliation!
US Secretary of State M. Rubio is unwelcome!
The KKE calls on workers, the people and the youth to give a militant response through their mass participation in the demonstrations organized by the trade unions and the peace movement against Rubio’s visit andto shout at the top of their voices: Murderers and their bases out of Greece! Greece must be disengaged from wars now! No sacrifices for their profits and wars! No trust in the government and the parties supporting involvement in the wars!”
