In a statement on the US–Israeli attack on Iran, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece emphasizes the following:

“The new military attack by the state of Israel and the USA on Iran is a reprehensible and criminal act that brings us closer to a generalized war in the Middle East and the wider region.

The claims of a ‘pre-emptive’ strike —echoed by Euro-Atlantic mouthpieces in our country— are both absurd and pretextual, considering that the intentions of the US and Israel to launch a large-scale attack on Iran have been known for months. For this reason, substantial US firepower has been assembled and war preparations have intensified in order to impose their imperialist plans in the Middle East, including regime change in Iran.

There is a very real danger that existing war fronts in the region, such as the recent hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan, could escalate into a wider conflagration.

The New Democracy government has entangled the country in US-Israeli plans, even acting as their standard-bearer. It has turned the Souda base and other infrastructure into a launching pad, putting the people and the country at enormous risk. It bears grave responsibility, as do all the other parties that support Euro-Atlanticism and the strategic alliance with the state of Israel.

It is clear that, in light of these developments, any participation by the New Democracy government in the dispatch of Greek military forces under the US’s spurious ‘peace plan’ in Gaza would amount to a criminal act against the Greek people. Any such plan must be blocked.

Our people must now strengthen their solidarity with the Iranian people and all peoples who are victims of imperialist barbarity, demanding the closure of the Souda base and other military bases, the withdrawal of the Greek Patriot missile battery from Saudi Arabia, and the return home of the frigate currently deployed in the Red Sea.
