Before the fragile agreement between the US and Iran has even been signed, the government is already rushing to assert its presence by deploying naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz. Whatever pretext may be used to justify this new overseas mission, and regardless of the timeframe envisaged, one fact cannot be denied: this is a mission into the lion’s den, serving interests that are alien to those of the Greek people.

It has once again been demonstrated that the military equipment for which the people pay dearly is acquired with the aim of ensuring the country’s continued and ever-deepening involvement in the imperialist plans of the US, NATO, and the EU, in order to satisfy the ambitions and interests of both foreign and domestic monopoly groups.

The silence of the parties of the compliant opposition, both old and new alike, regarding these dangerous developments for our people —and particularly for the Armed Forces— confirms that they share with the government the same strategic objectives as the Greek ruling class and its international allies. This is why they are all seeking to ensure anti-popular “stability”, a key element of which is the continuation of military involvement.

No warships should be sent to the Strait of Hormuz! The US–NATO bases must be closed immediately, and Armed Forces personnel serving on missions abroad must return home.

It is in the interests of the Greek people to intensify their struggle against military involvement, into which the government and the Euro-Atlantic parties are dragging them ever deeper.
