The government’s attempt to present the Mitsotakis–Erdoğan meeting as centred on the “positive agenda” of economic and other agreements, i.e. on the interests of business groups in both countries, cannot conceal the fact that, in practice, the unacceptable claims of the Turkish state remain in place, thereby refuting the narrative of “calm waters”.

The critical issues in Greek-Turkish relations (the casus belli, the “Blue homeland” doctrine, the grey zones, and the so-called “Turkish minority” in Western Thrace), which undermine the country’s sovereignty and sovereign rights, not only persist but are intensifying.

The complacency being cultivated is dangerous. The so-called “road map” does not concern the development of friendship between the two peoples, but rather the strengthening of NATO’s southeastern flank at a time when imperialist competition is escalating and “settlements” are being promoted at the expense of the peoples —“settlements” that the Greek government supports in every way. Moreover, it is telling that Mitsotakis refers to cooperation with Turkey in the “reconstruction” of Syria, when Turkey acts as an occupying power in Syria.

Within the framework of these “settlements”, bearing the seal of approval of the US and the EU, the government’s claim that it seeks “unmediated relations” with the Turkish government is hypocritical. On the contrary, the ground is being prepared for joint exploitation in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, for the benefit of energy and other groups.

Finally, it is provocative for Mr. Mitsotakis to express satisfaction with Greece’s cooperation with Turkey on migration, just days after the criminal act against refugees and migrants in Chios —a crime that is the result of this very “cooperation”, implemented on the basis of EU policy.
