A militant solidarity march in support of the heroic Cuban people took place on the afternoon of 23 May following a call by the Organizations of the KKE and KNE in Athens. Those gathered sent a clear message: “Hands off Cuba! The US imperialists must not dare to attack the Island of the Revolution!”.
The people of Athens expressed their solidarity with the Cuban people and their struggle, opposing US plans and their criminal blockade imposed upon the island.
Outside the US Embassy, a large banner bearing the slogan “Hands off Cuba – Solidarity with the Cuban people” was unfurled, as demonstrators declared their determination to stand alongside the people of Cuba.
The protesters also denounced NATO and the EU for their role in supporting the blockade and US plans against Cuba, as well as the Greek government, which has remained completely silent regarding both the current situation and the plans being prepared against the Cuban people.
Earlier, a rally was held in Eleftherias Square, where Thodoris Chionis, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and Secretary of the Attica Regional Committee of the KKE, called for vigilance in the days head in light of possible developments. He stressed:
“We continue the struggle and demand:
- The lifting of all measures comprising the US’s devastating economic blockade against Cuba. Let Cuba breathe!
- An end to all forms of persecution against Raúl Castro and the Cuban leadership.
- The removal of Cuba from the despicable list of ‘state sponsors of terrorism’, established by the US State Department in order to impose economic suffocation on the island of the revolution.
- That the Greek government take a clear stand condemning the aggression against Cuba!”
It should be noted that the KKE is organizing a large rally and concert in Athens on 15 June to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.
