Statement of the Press Office of the CC of the KKE:Οn developments in the war and  the deployment of military forces to Cyprus

The latest dramatic developments in Cyprus, as well as in other countries in the region, make it imperative for Greece to immediately disengage from the war ignited by the US and Israel through their military attack on Iran.

Instead of doing so, the Greek government is not only failing to withdraw Greek military forces stationed in Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea, but is also announcing the deployment of Greek frigates and warplanes, thereby increasingly escalating Greece’s involvement in the bloodshed of war.

The pretext that this is being done to safeguard “Cyprus’s defence” is yet another blatant and shameless lie. The role of the Greek military forces in Cyprus will be to protect the British bases on the island and other NATO infrastructure —namely, the very forces responsible for the Turkish invasion and occupation.

At the same time, the government’s spokesman cynical references to Greece’s accession to France’s “nuclear umbrella” as well as to the dangers faced by Greeks in the Middle East, including the personnel of the Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia, amount to an admission of support for the disastrous plans of the US and NATO in the region at any cost.

As long as the New Democracy government, with the tolerance of the other political parties, continues to make bases and other infrastructure available as a springboard for war, while adopting and reproducing the absurd pretexts put forward by the US and Israel for their criminal attack on Iran, the danger of the Greek people becoming a target for retaliation remains very real.

At this critical moment, no one can feign ignorance.

What is required now is for the people to rise up to demand the closure of all military bases —from Souda in Crete to Alexandroupolis and Larissa— the recall the Greek Patriot missile battery from Saudi Arabia, and to return home of all the frigates, F-16s, and every Greek vessel deployed in the region.

The imperialists’ war is not our war. It is in the interest of the Greek people to intensify the struggle to disengage Greece from it.
