Construction workers strike in many cities to demand pay rises and workplace safety measures
On Wednesday 22/1/25 thousands of construction workers took part in the strike rally in Athens and in all major cities of Greece.
The strikers put forward their demands to escalate the struggle for a new Collective Labour Agreement with a substantial increase in the minimum wage, for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week work, for immediate measures to ensure the social security of the construction workers and for health and safety measures at work.
The rally was followed by a march to the offices of the employers’ associations.
After the meeting with their representatives, Yiannis Tasioulas, President of the Federation of Construction Workers, told the strikers that this time all the employers’ associations were present at the meeting. The strikers presented their demands, but the employers did not have a unified proposal and said that their Executive Boards would have to discuss it first.
Y. Tasioulas described the meeting as fruitless and called for the struggle to be continued with greater tenacity. The builders decided to escalate their struggle with a new 48-hour strike on 12 and 13 February.
