Meeting of the GS of the CC of the KKE with the President of the Republic

D. Koutsoumbas: The developments in the region are alarming, the people must be vigilant and mobilized

On June 3, 2020, the GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, had a meeting with the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at his request, to discuss the developments in our country and the wider region.

Immediately after the meeting, the GS of the CC of the KKE made the following statement to the reporters:

"In the meeting with the President of the Republic, we expressed our concerns, but also the positions of the KKE regarding the developments in the wider region, the intensification of the competitions, the contradictions and their escalation, especially with the Turkish aggression and provocation in the Aegean Sea, the questioning of the sovereign rights of our country, our people and especially with the latest events, which either in Evros calls into question the Protocol of 1926 and the Treaty of Lausanne or now with the new statements, by activating the unacceptable and non-existent Turkish-Libyan agreement, memorandum, for the determination of EEZs, between these two countries. While the Turkish government announced seismic surveys - as we all know – south of Crete, for starters, and of course afterwards with the drilling rig for hydrocarbon extraction. This is unacceptable and dangerous for the developments in the region. And of course all this is happening against the background of the positions of USA, EU and NATO, which lead to co-management of the Aegean Sea, which concern the sovereign rights of the Greek people.

From this point of view, we call on the Greek people to be vigilant, to be properly informed by the government and by all political parties, to activate and mobilize the popular factor around these developments, to be all ready, because we do not rule out a conflictin the Aegean Sea or in the wider region, on the Greek borders, a fact that will be the occasion for the negotiation, for the co-management, even the concession of sovereign rights of our country. We are concerned about this.

Of course, the solution is not military confrontation. The solution lies in peace, in friendship between peoples, the solution lies, of course, in negotiations, the solution lies in leaving the predatory alliances of NATO and EU, to stop the operation of the dangerous US military bases operating in our homeland, turning Greece into a vast military camp, to stop participating and engaging in military operations by sending troops and officers of the Armed Forces abroad.

We discussed this whole of positions, while at the same time on the occasion of the great economic crisis that lies ahead - not because of the coronavirus, but because the pandemic served as a catalyst for these developments in the economy, after this small and unstable recovery we had the past two years - and popular strata are affected, workers, small and medium-sized businesses, popular families.

So, we raised the issues of the unacceptable measures that the Greek government implements and that it takes with fast track procedures, with the continuous Legislative Actions and other bills that brings to the Greek Parliament without even having time for consultation, discussion on these issues and popular mobilization. From this point of view, we have pointed out that civil liberties in our country must not be restricted at any time, we must not follow examples as is currently the case in the United States, with the unacceptable Trump administration, but also with this whole system of filth and corruption, that cultivates racism, repression, violence against the just demands of the people.

The Greek people will be at the forefront of this struggle, the KKE will be here with its proposals, with the information of the Greek people, with the information both in the Parliament and outside of it and mainly with our mobilization ".
