No more dead workers for the profits of COSCO

The above slogan was printed in the banner hang by the workers on Thursday 28/10 at the company’s offices, where thousands of people gathered to stand by the side of the dock workers of the COSCO Chinese monopoly who are on strike. The dock workers’ struggle began after the tragic death of one of their colleagues. They demand the signing of a collective agreement, the reinforcement of safety measures in the workplace, a health and security committee, recruitments, etc.

We should note that the monopoly, without respecting the National Day in Greece, as the 28th of October 1940 marks the beginning of the heroic anti-fascist struggle of the Greek people against the fascist invaders, seeking to declare the strike unlawful. However, the effort of the COSCO employers failed and the lawsuit filed against the strike was dismissed as invalid.

Nikos Ksourafis, president of the Labour Centre of Piraeus, attended the mass gathering of the workers at the COSCO shipping container terminal and stressed that they waged a great, victorious struggle. “You managed to unite the workers and prove that they can act as one”, explaining that it was this particular feat that exerted pressure to reject the effort of the employers to declare the COSCO workers’ strike unlawful.

We salute the mass gathering shouting out loud: no more dead workers for the profits of COSCO!” stressed Sotiris Poulikogiannis, president of the Trade Union of Metal Workers of Attica. He underlined that the death of workers is not an accident or misfortune and clarified that workers want to work with rights and dignity, to be able to live and raise their children.

Hundreds of trade unions in Greece express their solidarity with the heroic struggle of the workers in the Piraeus port against the intransigent position of the monopoly. This solidarity transcends borders, as solidarity mobilizations also took place by trade unions in Istanbul (Turkey) and Livorno (Italy), while trade unions of various countries (Cyprus, Sweden, Spain, Kazakhstan, Egypt, countries of Latin America, etc.) continue sending their messages of solidarity.
