Statement by Lefteris Nikolaou - Alavanos, MEP of the KKE, on the continued detention for several months of Daniel Jadue, member of the CC of the CP of Chile and former mayor of Recoleta

The continued detention for several months without trial of Daniel Jadue,member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile and former mayor of the municipality of Recoleta, raises many serious questions.

The Chilean authorities have targeted Daniel Jadue because, as mayor of Recoleta, he tried to reduce the cost of medicines for the popular strata, in a country where there is no insurance coverage for prescriptions and the patient is charged 100% of the cost of the medicine.

The whole persecution highlights, among other things, the class nature and the limits of bourgeois democracy, even when ‘left’ alliances governwith the participation of Communist Parties in the government.

We are following the developments and express our solidarity with comrade Daniel Jadue, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
