Our people cannot and should not become complacent about the meeting of Foreign Minister N. Dendias with President Erdoğan and Foreign Minister M. Çavuşoğlu in Ankara, following the "exploratory talks" between the two NATO allies.

In practice, it has been proven that competition and economic cooperation between the Greek and Turkish bourgeois classes and governments have nothing to do with the interests of both peoples.

The Turkish government insists on questioning the sovereignty of Greek islands, on their demilitarization, on the characterization of the Muslim —as provided for in the Treaty of Lausanne— minority in Thrace as Turkish, and on other claims.

Under these circumstances, the allegedly positive climate and agenda during the joint press conference demonstrate that the "bargaining" is being upgraded and a compromise is being prepared for the joint exploitation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean; new dichotomous plans are being promoted in Cyprus, mediated by the US, NATO and the EU, in the framework of dangerous imperialist competition in the region, in which both governments are involved.

Mr. Dendias's praises for the so-called "acquis communautaire" conceal the real role of the EU, which maintains strategic relations with Turkey and intervenes to promote the interests of European monopolies, to the detriment of the peoples of the region and the sovereign rights of our country.
